About NJ4A

One voice for older adults in New Jersey

While each county is unique, NJ4A brings together the 21 County Offices on Aging

to advocate for seniors, share best practices, and speak on

behalf of older adults across the state.

Our Mission

NJ4A is a statewide network focused on the needs of older adults in New Jersey. Serving older adults since 1973, we exist to:

  • Serve as the statewide advocate to enhance services for older New Jersey residents.
  • Encourage high standards of professionalism and service in the field of aging, and provide mutual support to member Area Agencies on Aging.
  • Gather and share information about the lives of seniors in New Jersey, elevate statewide and federal conversations on aging, and serve as a liaison to government about the impact of these issues on a growing older adult population.

While NJ4A speaks with one voice, we also look for ways to blend our voice with others serving older adults in New Jersey.

Our History and Role

In 1973, the federal Older Americans Act created Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) to advocate and plan for services for people age 60 and older, and to help them get those services. In New Jersey, there are 21 federally designated county Area Offices on Aging.

The 21 counties administer programs under Older Americans Act funding, act as lead agencies for Aging and Disability Resource Connections, and address aging issues in each county.

NJ4A’s role is to advocate on statewide aging issues; educate the public; coordinate best practices in health, wellness, evidence-based programs, and training; and collaborate with elected officials, aging-network providers, and senior groups.

The role of each county AAA

Each Area Agency is mandated to perform the following:

Advocate

Work with government officials and local service providers on the needs of seniors, and recommend legislative action.

Identify

Prioritize human services needs of seniors and develop a County Area Plan for coordinating services.

Serve

Act as the focal point in the county for advocacy and coordination of programs for seniors.

Interface

Work among agencies, officials, and local communities to develop aging programs.

Maintain

Keep a central source of data and information so older adults have reasonable, convenient access to services.

Disseminate

Share current information on benefits and entitlements with the public and the local aging network.
